Depolarization of circularly polarized light in birefringent crystal

Abstract

In the paper we consider a depolarization phenomenon of light with partial temporal coherence and circular state of polarization passing through birefringent medium. In order to describe degree of polarization changes of light passing through birefringent crystal we use the Mueller Stokes matrix formalism extended by additional depolarization matrix. Results of experimental tests of theoretical predictions are presented as well.

Andrzej W Domański, Faculty of Physics

Andrzej W. Domanski received the M.S.E.E., Ph.D., and D.Sc. degrees from Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland, in 1967, 1975, and 2005, respectively. He is currently a Professor and the Head of the Optoelectronic Laboratory, Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology. He has authored more than 200 papers and patents on optical fiber sensors, magneto-optics, integrated optics, and polarization and diffraction of light. Prof. Domanski is a Fellow of the International Society for Optical Engineers (SPIE).

Marcin Redek is currently working toward the M.Sc. degree with the Optics Division of the Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology

Daniel Budaszewski, Faculty of Physics

Daniel Budaszewski received the M.Sc. Eng. degree in optoelectronics in 2005 from Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland, where he is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree with the Faculty of Physics. He was a member of the Polish chapter of the Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers SPIE, which has transformed into Photonics Society of Poland in 2008. He is an author or a coauthor of 17 journal and conference papers including 6 peer-reviewed journal papers. His current research interests include depolarization of partially coherent light in liquid crystals and photonic liquid crystal fibers. He was a trainee at the Photonics Department at Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Belgium. Mr Budaszewski is involved in several scientific research programs for industrial applications. He has contributed to design and test a prototype of new kind of polarimeter in cooperation with ?Sensomed? optoelectronic company. He was awarded a special scholarship for innovative researchers from Centre of Advanced Studies of the Warsaw University of Technology.
